Thinking about Phelps

What an extraordinary talent, an Olympic champion, now shot to hell with drugs. What a waste.

Michael Phelps

Prepping for caricature of Phelps- looking for his feautures. Now he has this "I'm a rebel" beard going on.

Customer Sketches- profiles

It was a busy service day and there was little time to sketch the customers. I mainly spent moments trying to visualize the skull underneath the features. The overcast sky and even light made it difficult, but I began to see the structure. Interesting.

Pushing Pencil- 4 more

Getting approach and technique familiar for move into charcoal. Soft focus eye sockets, nose structure and mouth shape, then soft general shape of face and head, then details and tightening. Went too far to see what "too far" is. Customers, about two to three minutes each. pencil 4 x 6 in.

4x pencil sketches- musings

Four quick pencils, from photos in the paper and from life. I was thinking about nose shapes, how to deemphasize large noses and structure the shapes. I think I am almost to an understanding of rhino-structure, relationship to eyes and mouth structures and musculature in order to draw really outstanding caricatures.

Tim Geithner of the Fed

From sketch to ink to digital color.

The T-Men

The economy is on my mind- two members of the financial team that the President assigned to ride herd on the recovery- Kenneth Feinberg (pencil) and Timothy Geither (ink)
Feinberg is a sketch for shadow and expression, but not well known.
Geither always looks like he just tasted something awful. He reminds me of the antangonist in the movie Ghost. I may develop this one further.

Bill Maher- stages

As with my painting, sometimes overworking it turns good into bland. So I will try another and see how it goes.

The Balloon Guy gets arrested

Richard Heene, inventor, tv personality wannabe, mad genius, pathetic soul. Desperate for some sort of fame, he concocted a hoax that had a whole state in disaster mode and the whole world holding its breath. Well, here's your fame...and a nice cell in prison to think about your next ambition.

Work in Progress- Letterman

Maddie Albright and her Pin Collection

Roughs

Two rough sketches- Letterman and Pam Anderson. Pencil
Mapping out Letterman's oval head. Anderson? Just wanted to see if I could capture here gigantic square head and still make her sexy.

Maddie Albright Hawks Her Jewelry

Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright is publishing a book of all the pins she collected over the years on the Government dole.
(I've included all the steps to the illustration, from ink outline to ink wash to digital color. At the end, I decided to expand her forehead size- it was too blocky for such a fully formed cranium. )

Oldie but a goodie

Gov. Blagojavich, criminal/politician...as if that were two different things. Water color and ink

from this morning's coffee sketch book

When I get up in the morning I have a cup of coffee and scan the morning news online. While doing that, I sketch. Here is what it looks like.
This morning, I found a pic of Tom Hanks that shows some of the facial features that give him that permanent terrified look, so I tried to map them out for later. Then Carley Simon is suing Starbucks for not making her rich. Tough. Then, a bunch of Letterman simply because his whole story cracks me up. I can't let it go.
